Happy Birthday!

Happy 201st Birthday General Lee!
January 19th 1807 ~ October 12th, 1870
2nd of his class at West Point
Captain of USA Army in the Mexican War
Commanding General CSA
Army of Northern Virginia, Civil War

Do your duty in all things. You could never hope to do more, you should never wish to do less.
-General Robert Edward Lee

Posterity will rank Lee above Wellington or Napoleon, before Saxe or Tureene, above Marlborough or Frederick, before Alexander or Caesar... [Lee was] the greatest general of his or any other age. He made his own name, and the Confederacy he served, immortal.
-The Montreal Telegraph
God's will ought to be our aim, and I am quite content that His designs should be accomplished and not mine.
- Gen. Lee

~Hold to your purity and virtue. They will sustain you in every calamity.~
~I did only what my duty demanded. I could have taken no other course without dishonor~
~Those who oppose our purposes are not always to be regarded as our enemies.~
-General Lee
As an American citizen, I take great pride in my country, her prosperity and institutions, and would defend any State if her rights were invaded. But I can anticipate no greater calamity for the country than a dissolution of the Union.
-General Lee.
~Above all things, learn at once to worship you Creator and to do His will as revealed in His Holy Book.~
-General Lee

As in the lives of all persons, Lee's essence was to be found not in what he said, but in what he did. There wee dimensions to Lee, but his life was one long response to whatever struck him as being the call of duty.
-Charles Bracelen Flood
Lee's life was one that needs no defense; it was a life full of deeds that require no justification. It would be easy to deify this man who led a life of such stunning nobility, to make him into an almost imaginary figure of mythic proportions. However, it would be a mistake to do so. The value of studying the life of Robert E. Lee lies in seeing that he was in one profound way no different from every other person who comes into the world.... It was his awareness of his own insufficiency and of his need for the grace and mercy of God that formed the foundation of his extraordinary character.
-J. Steven Wilkins, "Call of Duty"
Lee is the greatest military genius in America.
-General Winfield Scott

  3. Amanda,

Did you ever study General Lee's father? I can't remember his name at the moment, but he also was quite fascinating.

You are also aware that the only reason that General Lee fought for the South was because his State decided to.

I'm sure that you have forgotten more about General Lee than I can remember, so I'll stop trying to impress. :-)

  4. While I have not sutdied Lee's father specifically, (His name was Light Horse Harry Lee.) But I have read a lot about him through studying his son.

Yes, I am aware of the fact. "Save in the defense of my native state, I desire to never draw my sword again."

I also know he was related to very many important people in the government, including at least 3 presidents :Benjamin Harrison, William Harrison and Zachary Taylor. Also, there were so many Lee's in Virginia, that the family had two of their own schools, one for the girls, and one for the boys.

General Lee also had a pet rattle-snake at one time while he was on duty out west in the Texas area.

He was also related by marriage to George Washington, his father's best friend.

There is a ton more, but I'll stop trying to impress you! =)

Oh, and he never got any demerits for the entire time he was at West Point and gratuated 2nd in his class.

He also was in Illinois at one time, down by Saint Louis working on a dam in the Mississippi.
